Pirates of Penzance - 8-11 May 2013


It’s almost that time of year again!! Rehearsals are steaming ahead and things are looking and sounding spectacular thanks to Margaret, our Stage Director and Ros, our Chorus Mistress. The scenery painting and set are nearly finished and will be breathtaking, as always. As for the costumes....You’ll have to wait & see.

For all of those not involved in the show, please make sure you come and see us, and don’t forget to bring along your family and friends, but be quick because tickets are selling fast.

Pirates of Penzance - The Story


“Pirates” was the 3rd full length show to be written by Gilbert & Sullivan and followed on the great success of HMS Pinafore. It opened in New York on 31 December 1879 in order to establish copyright in America after Pinafore had been unofficially copied there by many companies. Its first opening in England was at the Royal Bijou Theatre, Paignton, Devon, for one night only on 30 December 1879 where the company was in the middle of a run of Pinafore. They still wore the Pinafore costumes.

The show opened in London on 3 April 1880 at the Opera Comique where it ran for 363 performances having run for over 3 months in New York. It remains one of the most popular G&S operas alongside ‘The Mikado’ and ‘HMS Pinafore’.

The story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on 29 February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. His apprenticeship indentures state that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic's only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.

MEMBER PROFILE - Sue Catchpole


Sue Catchpole
1. What was your first show with ENOS?
Having appeared in a few pantomimes with Larry Pendleton, he suggested that I joined ENOS for The Mikado and the celebrations of 50 years of ENOS.

2. What was or is your favourite ENOS show and why?
Ruddigore was great fun as I had shaken off some of my nerves by then and really got into the Land Girl part. The camaraderie on and off stage was phenomenal!

3. Your most disliked food.
Banana Split because they look divine but, due to a food intolerance, I just can’t eat them!

4. Your favourite film or TV show.
Recently, it has to be ‘Les Mis’ because it was incredibly moving and brought back some very strong memories of performing some of the wonderful songs from the musical in a charity show that was both an enormous pleasure to be part of and proved to be a great success raising a few thousand pounds. ‘A Beautiful Mind’ was one of few films I have ever watched twice. It appealed because it demonstrated so clearly how a perceived weakness in a person can be their strength. Another favourite is ‘Chocolat’ for many reasons... including a love of France.

5. The part you would most like to play on stage (not necessarily G&S but anything, anyhow, anywhere).
One of my favourite characters is Ria (Wendy Craig) from Butterflies. Having two boys myself I very much relate to her male dominated household (although I like to think that I CAN cook!).

6. Any irritating habits, that is - your own.
Not answering the question...

7. Most embarrassing moment.
Last summer in France when I launched into my pigeon French to strike up a conversation and the lady patiently waited until I had finished struggling and then said ‘you’re from England, aren’t you?’

8. Favourite animal.
Has to be horses, a childhood passion for riding involved mucking out to ‘earn’ a half-hour weekly ride. I’m none too happy with Findus right now...

9 . First musical memory.
From the age of six I belonged to a tap dancing group called ‘The Hellesdon Toppers’. We sang and danced in shows performed at old people’s homes during December and January each year. I stayed with them until the age of 15 when other things grabbed my interest.

10. What did you have for breakfast (day not specified).
Usually some kind of oat clusters with grapes but occasionally porridge with honey.

Miss Janet Filby


It is with regret that we learned of the death in January of Janet Filby.

Janet joined the East Norfolk Amateur Operatic Society in 1960, her first show being Iolanthe in May at Hoveton Village Hall. She was one of a chorus of twenty Fairies, not including Phyllis (Yvonne Yeomans), Celia (Joan Webb) Leila (Diana Shreeve) and Fleta (Sally Causton). In 1963 George Baker joined the society to play Luiz in The Gondoliers. Janet sang in the chorus until 1967, when Trial by Jury and The Sorcerer were performed, still at Hoveton.

In 1962 she was elected the society’s Secretary, with Barry Saull as Chairman and Anthony Rush as Treasurer. She was one of General Stanley’s daughters in The Pirates of Penzance production in the same year. She continued as secretary until in 1982 when she took on the office of Chairman for the next three years with Jane Dodd as Secretary and Ron Hillman as Treasurer. 1983 was the Silver Jubilee for the Society, and The Sorcerer and Trial by Jury were produced by George Baker with Musical Director Simon Sanders. They were performed at Hoveton High School. Peter Winter was Sir Marmaduke, Pam Warren was Lady Sangazure and Beverley Baker (McInnes) was Constance, her daughter.

From 1972 until 1988, Janet was the Wardrobe Mistress, and did a grand job.

Janet sang in Summer Concerts; including the Gilbert and Sullivan For All concerts that Donald Adams and Thomas Round regularly organized. They were performed at Cromer Pier or St Andrews Hall, and the Society provided the chorus.

Janet continued to support the Society by becoming a Vice-President (Patron) until 2000, when her patronage lapsed.

Janet was a quiet lady, who always gave of her best. It is because of the dedication of past members that we have such a successful and friendly Society today.

ENOS will be providing musical ‘snippets’ from The Pirates of Penzance at Horning Boat Show Saturday 4th May 10am to 5pm.. We have two slots during the course of the day.

An Evening of Gilbert & Sullivan at Frettenham Village Hall on Saturday 13th April at 7.30pm. with Pam Warren, Patrick Monk, Mark Horner, Alan Weyman, Beverley McInnes, Moira Weller and David Kett. There will be a bar and refreshments. The concert will include excerpts from every G&S operetta.

Jay Singers present 'All Creatures, Great & Small' on 20th April 2013 at St. Peter's Church, Sheringham, starting at 7pm. The Jay Singers are joined by the Children's Choir of Beeston Hall School. The programme includes 'Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo' together with other animal themed songs.
